“THE BEAM”
Beam Camp

About the Show

In the summer of 2023, WHOOP DEE DOO artists worked with 43 campers (ages 9-14) at Beam Camp to create a short film over the course of 12 days inspired by the camp’s sculpture titled “Welcome Beacon”: a twelve-foot tall structure covered in translucent modular tiles designed by artists Mayowa Tomori and Michael Runge.

WHOOP DEE DOO presented thematic movie ideas to the 43 campers, asking them to collaborate in a multitude of ways - designing props, sets, makeup, costumes and sound work, as well as assisting in filming, directing, lighting design and acting. The campers were presented with the basic concept of the short film's narrative: Campers are wandering in the forest when they come across a strange structure. When they activate the structure, they are confronted with “forest martians” and interact with them. Soon, they all become fast friends and explore the camp together.

With the narrative presented, the roles and needs of the production were delegated, campers broke into groups to distribute a vast array of production-related tasks. Campers participated in dozens of workshops in a 12 day period to design costumes and characters, practice filming and lighting design, expand on the film narrative, and create miniature sets and characters.

Our end-product is a film designed and created by campers and directed by WHOOP DEE DOO artists.
