About the Show

Making TV Magic was a collaborative, intergenerational workshop series and public access variety TV show designed and created by residents of Red Hook, Brooklyn. The workshops, led by WHOOP DEE DOO’s artist educators, were specifically constructed to welcome first-time art makers and provide creative opportunities for students and older adults.

The project utilized the variety television show platform to showcase the ideas, talents, and interests of the intergenerational programming participants. Every WDD project has a basic theme to make initial brainstorming feel fun and accessible, and our project's theme with the Miccio Community Center was “winter storm”, Under this theme, participants ages 5-86 brainstormed television show ideas such as yeti self-defense techniques, an ice fishing-themed jokes show, a “yeti igloo renovator” skit, and more. Participants learned the basics of filmmaking, including camera operating, cinematography, lighting, and green screen techniques. Episodes also showcased collaborations with local performing arts groups, and participants created ambitious sets, props, and costumes that highlighted each groups’ folkloric history, regalia, music, and dance.
