About the Show

On August 31, 2019 Whoop Dee Doo presented a new performance and outdoor installation in collaboration with local teen artists, community arts and cultural groups, and PARADE, a Queens-based public art program. Using Windmuller Park as venue and inspiration, the project celebrated the heavily-used public space and the diverse cultures of its visitors. Designed to fit the Windmuller park bandshell, a set was built out by Whoop Dee Doo artists and local teens in the two weeks prior to the event. To help combat the summer heat, the centerpiece of the show was a 16’ tall slushee machine that blended together performers and spit out a variety of mishaps before successfully serving up slushees for the the entire crowd in time for the closing dance. Queens high school students and Whoop Dee Doo artists worked to develop the shows theme and structure, build sets, costumes, and props, and rehearse with the participating performing groups at Sunnyside Reformed Church from August 19th to 30th.
